The ancient ideogram of the Goddess's name, Inanna's knot is the agricultural symbol of reeds representing fertility and abundance. As the scripts are written, Inanna and the shepherd Dumuzi were joined in a sacred marriage on the spring equinox, establishing the fertility of the land and the people. This sacred marriage became ritual ceremony, wherein a High Priestess, acting as Inanna, adorned in jewelry perhaps similar to these earrings, and a King, representing Dumuzi would reenact the union on the Ziggurat, or temple, grounds in a joyous beer-filled celebration of the Goddess's sexual and fertile force.
