Inanna, ancient Sumer’s Goddess of sexual love, war, fertility, power and justice, later worshiped as Ishtar. The most recognized Goddess in Mesopotamia, her myths tell the story of a young woman who grew to take the power she desired, was courageous against all odds, had an insatiable desire for men and she who took fierce revenge on those who wronged her. Among her many names, she was called the "Queen of Heaven and Earth," "Loud Thundering Storm" and "Queen of Seven Temples."
Inanna’s many temples housed a community of sacred women who would care for the temple grounds and honor her through ritual. Her main temple, "House of Heaven," was home to the priestesses of Inanna. The rituals performed included sacred prostitution, in which the King or Priest and High Priestess would reenact the sacred marriage of Dumuzi and Inanna to secure a bountiful harvest and prosperity of the people during the spring festival, known as Akitu. During this sacred act, the High Priestess would recite the names of the land, the animals, and the people, to ensure fertility for all.
